Putting our hearts into one family’s home.

Congratulations to Kathleen Beebout & Family!  Kathleen was nominated by her daughter & public vote has awarded them to receive a new $50,000.00 kitchen make-over. Here is Kathleen's Story:

"I am entering the Kitchen Makeover contest on behalf of my mom, Kathleen Beebout.

For my sister and I, the kitchen has always been the heart of my mom's house.  I am well aware that this is not an ugly kitchen contest, and my mom's kitchen is anything but.  Everything in her kitchen has a story, the decoupaged light switch covers, the eclectic vegetable tiles on the backsplash, the strange whale-like noises that the dishwasher makes, and the vintage (and I mean vintage) Radarange microwave and oven set. However, as much as I love these quirks, I know that my mom struggles with her oven breaking down all the time, washes the dishes in the sink before she washes them in the dishwasher, and fights with the two gas burners on our stove that still (kind of) work.

My mom has been through some hard times financially and emotionally, like so many people today, but she has dealt with these struggles by bringing people together through her food and using this to give back to those who are most in need.

I remember the first time my mom decided she was hosting a dinner party at her house. She was inviting what I considered to be a motley crew of people, some whom she barely knew. Not everyone can pull off a party whose invitees don't know each other, but when my mom does this people bond within minutes because the food is so good and because they all love my mom and the way she makes everyone feel like family.

Two years ago my mom won the Overall Blue Ribbon at the Iowa State Fair for her Pecan Heath Bar Pie. It was the first year she had entered the Iowa State Fair Pie Contest, which she decided to enter based on her hunch that her pie was the best in Iowa, if not the country.  She was right.

After winning the State Fair pie competition, she developed quite a following of people wanting a taste of her Blue Ribbon pie.  With this momentum she decided to establish Pies With a Purpose.  She set up a Facebook group and made the announcement that she would take orders for pies, requesting only that the recipients make a donation to the Food Bank of Iowa or a charity of their choice.  It didn't take long for the requests to come.

For the past two years, once November brings its freezing temperatures, my mom takes on the seemingly impossible task of baking dozens of "pies with a purpose" for people to take to their Thanksgiving and Christmas parties.  To date, through Pies With a Purpose, my mom has donated over $5,000 to the Food Bank of Iowa, in addition to numerous other donations to local charities in Central Iowa.

I am nominating my mom for the Kitchen Makeover because her kitchen is so important to her and to the well-being of so many people.  It is full of warmth, memories and love--but it needs a pick me up.  I am confident that all improvements to her kitchen will not only make her life easier, they will be paid forward and then some."

It’s often the first light to brighten in the morning – and the last to be dimmed before the family turns in at night. It can be a game room, a school room or simply a place where a family shares the day’s stories and finds room to grow together.

It is the family kitchen.

And when a home lacks the proper kitchen, we believe a little bit of warmth is lost. That’s why we’re going to help make one family’s kitchen feel more like home by giving them a place to make new memories.

We are a team of professionals that made a committment to give back, and use our talents & skills to do so.  Please stay tuned for pictures, video, updates & how the 96 hour construction process unfolds.
